Backrooms Becomes A24’s Highest-Grossing Film Ever

Written by Kelvin on 8 Jun 2026

TLDR: Kane Parsons’ horror film Backrooms has shattered A24’s box office record, earning USD212.6 million globally.

Backrooms Record-Breaking Success

The movie stars Renate Reinsve as a therapist who ventures into an eerie alternate dimension to save her patient, played by Chiwetel Ejiofor.

The film opened with an impressive USD118 million worldwide last weekend.

Despite a 70% drop in its second weekend, it still earned USD25.9 million, bringing its domestic total to a strong USD135 million.

Stealing the Crown From Marty Supreme

Backrooms has overtaken Marty Supreme as A24’s biggest box office earner. Timothée Chalamet’s 2025 film previously held the record with USD191 million, but was produced on a much larger USD70 million budget.

What makes Backrooms even more impressive is its modest budget of under USD10 million and the fact that 20-year-old director Kane Parsons had never directed a feature film before. The film is now positioned to become a major financial success for the studio.

Backrooms 2 In The Works

A24 has already greenlit Backrooms 2, although details about how the sequel will expand on the internet lore remain under wraps. The film joins Focus Features’ Obsession in showing the current box office strength of low-budget horror.
