First and Foremost: Why Are Greek Gods Involved in Nolan’s The Odyssey?

In the source material, gods like Athena, Poseidon, and Zeus directly influence Odysseus’s decade-long journey home from the Trojan War.

The gods aren’t optional decoration in this story as they’re the reason Odysseus faces storms, monsters, and endless detours.

They are a form of divine intervention, and here are the Greek deities that we know of that’ll be appearing in the The Odyssey movie.

The Greek Gods Appearing in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey

Christopher Nolan’s adaptation confirms that Greek gods will appear in The Odyssey, though not quite in the way you might expect.

Rather than seeing Zeus hurling lightning bolts from Mount Olympus or Poseidon rising from the waves in full divine glory, Nolan takes what he calls a “realistic approach” to depicting the gods

This means their power will be shown through natural phenomena and the characters’ reactions to them.

Here are the Greek gods and goddesses that’ll be appearing in Nolan’s The Odyssey:

1. Zeus

Zeus sits at the top of Mount Olympus, king of all gods, lord of thunder and lightning. He’s the one calling the shots when divine squabbles break out.

In The Odyssey, he acts less like an active participant and more like a referee who occasionally steps onto the field.

Zeus in Nolan’s film could work as a shadowy presence, someone you feel rather than see constantly. He might appear in brief but pivotal moments, making decisions that alter Odysseus’ path.

He doesn’t drive the plot so much as he allows it to unfold, which actually makes him more unsettling than if he were openly antagonistic.

2. Poseidon

Poseidon is the god of the sea, and in The Odyssey, he’s basically the reason Odysseus can’t catch a break.

He’s powerful enough that the other gods avoid mentioning Odysseus when he’s around. They literally wait until Poseidon is off accepting sacrifices in Ethiopia before they hold a council to help the poor guy escape Calypso’s island.

In Nolan’s version, Poseidon could work a few ways. Maybe he’s a full antagonist, appearing in all his wrathful glory. Or maybe he’s more symbolic—an unstoppable force of nature that represents everything standing between Odysseus and home.

Either way, you’re probably going to see a lot of water in this film, and not the fun kind.

3. Athena

Zendaya will be given the role of Athena in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey

Athena shows up more than any other deity in The Odyssey, and she’s genuinely invested in getting Odysseus home.

As the goddess of wisdom and warfare, she’s got the skill set to back up her loyalty.

Athena could work in a few ways. If the film leans into the mythological elements, you might see her appearing in disguise or influencing events from the shadows.

If it goes for a more grounded approach, her role could be symbolic, representing Odysseus’s own intelligence and strategic thinking.

4. Circe

DC Animated Universe’s depiction of Circe

Circe is the daughter of Helios, the sun god, which technically makes her divine.

She lives alone on the island of Aeaea, and when Odysseus and his men arrive, she does what any self-respecting sorceress would do: she turns most of them into pigs.

Hermes steps in to help Odysseus resist her magic by giving him a protective herb called moly. Armed with this, Odysseus confronts Circe, and instead of another transformation, they reach an understanding. She reverses the spell on his men, and Odysseus ends up staying with her for a year.

Circe could appear as a literal enchantress with all the mystical trappings, or Nolan could strip away the magic and reimagine her as a mortal woman with real power over men through cunning rather than spells.

She’s also one of the few figures in The Odyssey who treats Odysseus as an equal, which makes her memorable.

5. Calypso

Calypso is one of those characters who lingers in your mind long after you’ve closed the book. She’s a nymph, daughter of the Titan Atlas, and she lives alone on the island of Ogygia.

Nolan could play this as a psychological struggle, showing Odysseus torn between comfort and purpose. Or he might lean into the uncomfortable reality that Calypso’s love isn’t really love at all—it’s captivity dressed up in divine affection.

6. Aeolus

Aeolus is technically not one of the major Olympian gods, but rather the keeper of the winds.

He gives Odysseus a bag containing all the winds except the gentle west wind, which should carry the crew safely home to Ithaca.

Unfortunately, Odysseus’ crew thinks the bag holds treasure. They open it while he’s asleep, unleashing chaos and blowing the ship right back to Aeolia.

If the film leans into the visual side of things, we could see a floating island and literal bags of wind.

The moment when everything goes wrong could be both visually stunning and emotionally crushing. Aeolus represents hope squandered, and that’s the kind of quiet tragedy Nolan handles well.

7. Heracles

Here’s this legendary figure, the guy who completed twelve impossible labours, reduced to a ghost. The message is pretty clear: even the greatest heroes end up here if they’re not careful.

Heracles could work as a warning sign for Odysseus. You’re watching a man who’s been away from home for years, who’s lost crew members and hope, and then he meets the echo of someone who was supposed to be untouchable.

Whether Nolan leans into the supernatural or keeps things grounded, this encounter could be a quiet gut-punch in the middle of everything else.

8. Hermes

Rick Riordan’s depiction of Hermes in the Percy Jackson movies

Hermes is the one Zeus sends to tell Calypso she needs to release Odysseus after seven years of holding him captive on her island.

Not the worst assignment, honestly.

Besides Athena, Hermes takes the most active role in helping Odysseus get home. He’s not just watching from Mount Olympus; he’s down there doing the work.

Nolan might strip away the obvious godly appearances entirely and leave Hermes as something more subtle through a fortunate wind, a stranger with good advice, a moment of clarity that saves your life.

9. Helios

Helios shows up late to the party in The Odyssey, but he makes an impression. He’s the god of the sun, and honestly, he’s not thrilled about getting his hands dirty with mortal problems.

In the movie, you might not even see him directly.

Maybe just the cattle, the warning, and then the storm. Or he could appear briefly, radiating the kind of celestial authority that makes you realise how small humans are in this world.

10. Ino

Once a mortal princess who became a sea goddess after her own tragic story, she spots Odysseus struggling in the water after Poseidon tears his raft apart.

She gives him her veil, which keeps him afloat and guides him toward the Phaeacians.

It’s a brief moment, but it matters. Ino represents divine help arriving when you least expect it, from someone you’ve never even met.
