The Voice That Sealed RDJ’s Role as Doctor Doom
The Russo brothers have revealed the moment they became fully convinced that Robert Downey Jr. was the right choice to play Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday.
While directors Anthony and Joe Russo already believed the Oscar-winning actor could take on the iconic Marvel villain, hearing his Doctor Doom voice made the decision feel undeniable.
Speaking at Comic-Con 2026, Anthony Russo recalled that Downey unexpectedly debuted the voice while they were discussing the character inside a trailer.
Because Doctor Doom spends much of his time behind a mask, the directors knew that his voice would be essential to the performance.

Comparisons With His Famous Iron Man Line in Avengers: Endgame
Joe Russo said the performance immediately gave him chills. He compared the moment to Downey’s delivery of the iconic “I am Iron Man” line in Avengers: Endgame, when Tony Stark used the Infinity Stones in the film’s climactic battle.
According to Joe, Downey has a rare ability to create unforgettable cinematic moments, and his interpretation of Doctor Doom appears ready to continue that tradition in a much darker role.
Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to arrive in cinemas on Dec 18, 2026.
