Hollywood Legend Applauds Rising Indie Horror Directors
Steven Spielberg, the legendary filmmaker behind classics such as Jaws, Jurassic Park, and Indiana Jones, has praised a new generation of horror directors who are making a major impact on Hollywood.
Kane Parsons, creator of Backrooms, and Curry Barker, director of Obsession, have demonstrated that creative storytelling can achieve remarkable success without blockbuster-sized budgets.
Speaking to Pop Drop, Spielberg expressed his admiration for both filmmakers, highlighting how they were able to achieve success with limited resources.
While he admitted he has not yet seen Backrooms, he revealed that he thoroughly enjoyed Obsession.
The Rise of Content Creators to Big-Time Directors
Both Parsons and Barker began their careers on YouTube before making the leap to theatrical filmmaking. Parsons built a loyal Gen Z audience through his viral Backrooms web series, which was later adapted by A24 into a feature film.
The adaptation became a major success, earning USD154 million worldwide in just two weeks and becoming the highest-grossing film in A24’s history.
Barker followed a similar path, starting with the sketch comedy channel that’s a bad idea before directing Obsession for Blumhouse.
Produced on a budget of just USD750,000, the supernatural horror film has earned more than USD179 million globally, making it one of the most profitable movies ever made.
