Pavilion Opens Its Doors to TGV Cinemas on 18 Jun 2026

Every premium mall needs a cinema. It’s not a suggestion but a fact.

As such, Pavilion KL and TGV Cinemas are a match made in heaven. The goal of bringing the highest and most cinematic experience is only fitting for a location that is known as one of Malaysia’s largest entertainment hubs.

The cinematic experience in question will be paired with the finest gourmet experience, where customers will be treated like royalty through mouth-watering meals and first-class cinema service at their INDULGE halls.

Rolling Back the Years: How Pavilion KL Came to Be

The land where you now browse luxury boutiques and sip overpriced coffee once housed something entirely different: Bukit Bintang Girls’ School, founded way back in 1893 by European missionaries.

For over a century, this institution quietly championed girls’ education when that wasn’t exactly the norm, until it packed up and moved to Cheras in 2000, making room for something a bit more… shiny.

By 2001, a small group of design professionals decided Kuala Lumpur’s retail scene needed a serious glow-up.

They spent years planning what would become KL Pavilion, a mixed-use development that wasn’t just about shopping but about creating an actual destination that is complete with serviced apartments, office space, and a five-star hotel.

When the doors finally opened on 20 Sept 2007, the timing was almost suspiciously perfect: Visit Malaysia Year 2007 was also in full swing.

The centrepiece, a 3.6-metre Pavilion Crystal Fountain featuring Malaysia’s national hibiscus flower across three bowls, became an instant landmark.

And since then, Pavilion KL has been the go-to spot for both locals and tourists, making it easily one of the busiest entertainment hubs inside KL’s golden triangle.

You’ll find everything from Malaysian hawker favourites at food courts to international fine-dining restaurants.

The Gourmet Emporium on Level 1 alone could keep you busy for weeks, with spots like Laem Charoen serving proper Thai dishes and countless other eateries tucked between the fashion boutiques.

In essence, there is something here that’ll work.

The variety spans regional Southeast Asian food, Italian, Chinese, Korean, Western comfort food, and pretty much any cuisine you’re willing to hunt down across the building’s many levels.

3. Japan in Malaysia: Explore Tokyo Street

Tokyo Street on Level 6 feels like someone plucked a slice of Japan and dropped it into Pavilion KL.

Complete with traditional wooden storefronts and those iconic red lanterns that make you forget you’re still in Kuala Lumpur. It’s inspired by Tokyo’s Nakamise-dori, and honestly, it does a surprisingly good job of recreating that atmosphere without making you board a plane.

You’ll find authentic Japanese restaurants where the ramen actually tastes right, shops selling everything from yukata to Japanese snacks you didn’t know you needed, and cultural experiences that range from browsing traditional crafts to spotting items that would fit right into a Harajuku street style guide.

The precinct has been around for over a decade now, which means they’ve had plenty of time to fine-tune the whole “mini Tokyo in Malaysia” thing.

Walking through feels oddly transportive, especially when you’re surrounded by the aesthetic details like Asakusa-style lanterns and architecture that borrows from both traditional and modern Japanese design.

4. Snap Instagrammable Photos of Seasonal Decorations

Pavilion KL doesn’t do subtle when it comes to seasonal decorations. The mall transforms its entire Centre Court and entrance areas for major celebrations like Chinese New Year, Hari Raya, Christmas, and Deepavali with elaborate setups that honestly make your phone camera very happy.

During Raya 2025, they brought in traditional Malay orchestra performances and created a “Steps of Legacy” exhibition on their Spanish Steps.

For Chinese New Year, they’ve collaborated with Pop Mart for themed displays. The Christmas season gets the “Love & Magic” treatment with enchanting light installations throughout the mall.

You’ll find the best photo spots at the Centre Court, where the main installations live, plus the fountain area outside and those famous Spanish Steps inside.

The decorations usually stay up for about a month, so you have time to visit without the opening weekend crowds if that’s more your speed.

5. Cafe Hopping and Dessert Hunting

Pavilion KL takes its coffee and sweets seriously, which is good news if you’re the type who plans entire days around pastries.

You’ll find everything from cozy independent cafes tucked into corners to polished dessert spots on the upper floors, particularly around the Pavilion Elite section on Level 7.

Circling back to Gourmet Emporium on Level 1 is where most of your damage will happen. It’s packed with options that range from proper sit-down cafes to grab-and-go counters serving drinks that taste better than they have any right to.

6. Chill Out and Take a Walk Around Bukit Bintang

After you’ve wandered through Pavilion’s air-conditioned corridors for a few hours, stepping outside into Bukit Bintang proper feels like entering a completely different dimension.

The neighbourhood is busy in the best way, and it’s worth poking around even if you’re not hunting for anything specific.

There’s a pedestrian walkway connecting Pavilion to KLCC that you can use if your feet need a break from the pavements below. It’s covered, air-conditioned, and open from 6:00 AM to 11:00 PM, which means you can walk the 1.2 KM between shopping districts without melting into the pavement or dodging motorbikes.

But honestly, the streets around Bukit Bintang have their own charm—hawker stalls tucked between luxury boutiques, indie tech shops sitting next to heritage buildings.
