SPOILER ALERT

Ryland Grace, a former molecular biologist turned schoolteacher, wakes up alone on a spacecraft with no memory of who he is, where he is, or why he’s there. Slowly, fragments of his past return: Earth is on the brink of extinction. A microscopic organism known as Astrophage is consuming the Sun’s energy, threatening to plunge the planet into a new ice age. Grace was recruited for a desperate one-way mission aboard the starship Hail Mary, tasked with finding a solution light-years away.

In the Tau Ceti system, he makes first contact with an alien being he nicknames Rocky, a resourceful engineer from a species facing the same threat. Despite their biological and cultural differences, the two learn to communicate and form an unlikely friendship. Together, they discover a microscopic predator, Taumoeba, capable of destroying Astrophage and saving both their worlds.

Grace must make an impossible choice: return to Earth with the cure, or stay behind to ensure Rocky’s species survives. In the end, he chooses sacrifice—sending the cure home while remaining with Rocky’s people. Though he will never see Earth again, Grace finds a new sense of belonging among the Eridians, proving that courage, ingenuity, and friendship can reach across the stars.
