REAL STORY BEHIND THE CONJURING: LAST RITES

Like the earlier Conjuring films, Last Rites is based on a real case investigated by Ed and Lorraine Warren. This one is tied to the notorious Smurl haunting in West Pittston, Pennsylvania.

Jack and Janet Smurl moved into their Chase Street home in 1973 with their daughters. Over time, they reported disturbing phenomena: foul smells, loud banging, violent attacks, and even claims that their dog was thrown against a wall. The haunting gained national attention in the 1980s, with the Smurls appearing on talk shows — though sceptics accused them of seeking publicity.

In 1986, the Warrens were brought in. They described chilling activity inside the house, including drastic temperature drops, shaking mirrors, and moving furniture. They concluded that four spirits haunted the home: a young girl, an old woman, a male spirit, and a powerful demon using the others to terrorise the family.

The house was repeatedly blessed, and several exorcisms were attempted without success. Accounts differ — some priests claimed to experience nothing unusual. The Smurls eventually published their story in a 1986 book, The Haunted: One Family’s Nightmare, later adapted into a TV movie.

As for the demon, a local pastor claimed his prayers finally ended the haunting, though Janet Smurl said strange knocks and shadowy figures persisted until the family moved away in 1988. Interestingly, later residents reported no supernatural events at all.
