Synopsis

And now whatever way our stories end, I know you have rewritten mine by being my friend …

Wicked: For Good, directed by Jon M. Chu, is the second instalment in a two-part, live-action adaptation of the beloved Broadway musical Wicked. It continues the story of Elphaba Thropp (Cynthia Erivo) and Glinda Upland (Ariana Grande), exploring how their bond evolves under the weight of political and personal upheaval in the Land of Oz.

Set approximately five years after the events of Wicked (2024), Elphaba has embraced her role as the Wicked Witch of the West, now living in exile and leading a crusade for justice, particularly championing animal rights, while the Wizard's regime labels her a dangerous rebel. Glinda, on the other hand, has risen to become the public face of goodness in Oz—“Glinda the Good”—as a beloved palace figurehead under the guidance of Madame Morrible (Michelle Yeoh).

Their paths diverge sharply: Elphaba, isolated and defiant, continues to fight against corruption, while Glinda grapples with her emerging fame, the expectations of her new social role, and the guilt over their shattered friendship. Glinda also prepares for a grand Ozian wedding to Prince Fiyero (Jonathan Bailey), now Captain of the Guard—creating deeper emotional conflict between her duties and her heart.

The arrival of Dorothy Gale from Kansas disrupts the fragile balance between these two icons of Oz. Her presence triggers a cascade of events—including an angry mob rallying against Elphaba and political machinations orchestrated from within the Emerald City—that push both witches to confront their past, examine their convictions, and decide whether their friendship can be rekindled to “change Oz for good.”

Among the emotionally charged musical moments, the film spotlights an elevated duet of “For Good,” described as even more poignant than “Defying Gravity,” promising to deliver one of the film’s most stirring climaxes.
