Clayface Will Fully Embrace as an R-Rated Horror

How Scary Will Clayface Get?

Director James Watkins has revealed that DC’s upcoming Clayface movie will fully embrace its R-rated horror roots.

Speaking during San Diego Comic-Con, Watkins said the film’s disturbing body horror moments go well beyond what audiences have seen in the latest trailer, promising a darker and more unsettling experience.

Despite the film’s graphic horror elements, Watkins stressed that Clayface is not designed to shock audiences for the sake of it. Instead, he wants the horror to be exciting and entertaining, comparing the experience to riding an intense roller coaster that pushes boundaries while remaining fun rather than overwhelming.

The Origin of Clayface

Clayface tells the tragic origin story of Matt Hagen, an aspiring actor portrayed by Tom Blyth. After his face is brutally disfigured by a gangster, Hagen turns to an experimental treatment in a desperate attempt to restore his appearance.

The procedure instead transforms him into the iconic Batman villain with the terrifying ability to reshape his body into living clay.

Cast and Release Date of Clayface

Alongside Tom Blyth, the film stars Naomi Ackie as Dr. Caitlin Corr and Max Minghella as Gotham detective John Borelli. Clayface is scheduled to arrive in theaters on Oct 11, 2026, and will become the third film in James Gunn’s new DC Universe, following Superman and Supergirl.
