The Spider-Man Star Actress Joins the Franchise
Dunst was first announced as part of the sequel’s cast in March after previously expressing interest in joining the franchise.
Last year, she revealed that her children loved the first movie and joked that she wanted to take part in a film that would perform well financially.
What We Know About the Sequel
Director Jared Hess is returning to lead the sequel, working from a screenplay written alongside Chris Galletta. The film is currently scheduled to be released on Jul 23 2027.
Alongside Kirsten Dunst and Jack Black, the sequel will also see the return of Jason Momoa, Danielle Brooks, Matt Berry, and Jennifer Coolidge.
High Expectations for the Minecraft Movie Sequel
The first Minecraft Movie became one of Warner Bros.’ biggest box office openings when it premiered in Apr 2025, ranking as the studio’s third largest opening weekend of all time.
Jared Hess previously shared that making a sequel felt like a natural next step, pointing out that the Minecraft universe offers endless possibilities for storytelling and exploration.
Dunst’s character Alex, was teased during the end credits of the first film as “the other massively critical character” from the game, setting up her major role in the upcoming sequel alongside Steve.
