Cregger’s Resident Evil Film Eyes Record-Breaking Opening Weekend

Even if the film lands at the lower end of those projections, it would comfortably deliver the biggest opening weekend in Resident Evil franchise history.

Possibly A New Franchise Record

The current franchise record belongs to 2010’s Resident Evil: Afterlife, which opened with USD 26.65 million. Other entries in the long-running horror franchise debuted between approximately USD 17.7 million and USD 23 million.

A USD 40 million opening would therefore represent a major new benchmark for the series and signal renewed audience interest in bringing Resident Evil back to the big screen.

The projections are particularly impressive compared with the franchise’s previous reboot attempt. Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City opened with just USD 5.3 million in 2021, meaning the new film could potentially debut at more than seven times that figure.

What’s the New Resident Evil About?

Rather than directly continuing previous movies, the new Resident Evil tells a standalone story set within the franchise’s universe. Austin Abrams stars as Brian, a courier assigned to transport a donor organ to a hospital in Raccoon City.

What begins as a routine delivery quickly descends into a fight for survival as Brian encounters increasingly dangerous mutants and must make his way through a series of hostile locations.
